Quit Your Side Hustle

I once heard a motivational speaker say,

You have the same amount of days in the week as Beyoncé.

One of the most accomplished and celebrated performers in the modern era didn't have magic powers that allowed her to freeze time so she could refine and sharpen her abilities to eventually become one of music's major icons.

She just used her time differently than we did. While I'm not saying any of us should strive to be Beyoncé, I am saying that we should begin thinking about what we are doing with the time we have.

Uh oh...here we go...

THINK ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING WITH MY TIME??

DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I HAVE TO DO ALREADY!?!?

MY KIDS TAKE UP ALL OF MY TIME!!!

I'M WORKING NONSTOP JUST TO PAY RENT!!!

TIME??? WHAT'S THAT???? I'M A COLLEGE STUDENT!!!!

Ok. Is it all out of our systems?

No? Go ahead and throw out your final remarks before continuing.

Alright, let's keep going.

Many people today are working a full-time, five-day workweek for their main career. That's just one job. Those five days are dedicated to working hard for a paycheck that will carry their bills over 2-4 weeks until the next paycheck is needed.

For many, that job isn't enough. In fact, according to this article from June 2019, 45% of employed Americans had a side hustle. Nearly half of working people had linked a side gig to their already busy schedule. And, that was in 2019. Pre-Covid. Pre-pandemic. Pre-trillions of dollars in government spending. Pre-lockdowns. Pre-rent moratoriums. Pre-unemployment benefit extension cutoffs. Pre-fear-driven messaging. Imagine how many more people have now locked down any available free time they have to the promise of some extra money each month.

And, I get it. There are thousands of people who are surviving off of those side hustles. I've been there. At one point I was a full-time husband/pastor/father, as well as a side hustler in the form of a graphic designer, Uber AND Lyft driver, and a data cleanup specialist. We needed the money to give us a good quality of life. And, while I was exhausted 99.3% of the time, I was wiling to do it to provide for my family.

But, there came a moment when I realized something really frustrating. My side hustles were hurting me, not helping me. They had created barriers to my personal and financial growth. Somewhere along the way, these side hustles had cornered me into believing that they were providing financial stability. In fact, they were limiting my financial potential.

Every hour you spend working on a side hustle, is time you could be spending investing into your own profitable business.

What's the difference?

A side-hustle allows you a fixed level of income that will give you security.

A business allows you to scale your income over time and has the potential to provide you with freedom.

This is a mind shift. It means you have to stop thinking of yourself as a worker bee, and start believing that you can be the Queen Bey...see what I did there?

When I first gave up side hustles, it was uncomfortable. I had trained myself that every free moment of my day should be spent making an hourly wage. But, once I trained myself to see that an hourly investment into a future business could provide something beyond any side hustle, I was hooked.

I want the same for you. That's why I'm launching my first online course designed to break you out of a side hustle mentality and offer simple ideas that will help you launch your first startup business.
